Wright Influenced Prairie

Crete, IL

The pinwheel plan of this 8000 square foot home is influenced by Wright’s Wingspread, once the home of the Johnson & Johnson family in Racine Wisconsin. The house revolves around the central fireplace that soars 3 stories internally and visually anchors the clerestory. The formerly flat site was sculpted to create a dry stream bed and to allow more light into the lower level. Over 60 leaded glass windows were custom designed and fabricated for the home. A simple palette of materials; brick, quartered oak complimented with walnut accents, and plaster reinforces the strong sculptural forms.
