Modern Penthouse

Chicago, IL

The main concept of the renovation is simply shared space and light. To defy the 1300 square foot area, distinctions are blurred as each room opens to the next, and each is delineated with multi-functional millwork, glass transoms, and movable panels. The simple and consistent palette of materials – limestone, laurel wood, and marble – unifies the spaces while meticulous detailing and craftsmanship conveys refinement. The building designed by Bertrand Goldberg in 1960, just prior to Marina Towers, highlights the influence of his time in Berlin working with Mies van der Rohe. The Beatles were in residence on August 12, 1966, when John Lennon held a press conference in this penthouse suite to apologize for previously boasting that the Beatles were “more famous than Jesus.”
